Integrating Orthanc and OHIF inside modern radiology worklists
Orthanc is a lightweight, RESTful DICOM server designed for medical archiving. OHIF is an open-source, zero-footprint DICOM viewer running natively in HTML5 canvas browsers. Combining these two utilities provides a robust alternative to expensive proprietary PACS viewers.
To deploy Orthanc inside HNVNS's ecosystem, we establish DICOM C-STORE routing filters on local scanner acquisition nodes. Scans route to an Orthanc cloud-mirrored instance over encrypted TLS tunnels, ensuring metadata is synced immediately.
The OHIF Viewer retrieves slices using WADO-RS web protocols. This removes local storage requirements, rendering high-slice CT scans in standard web browsers in less than three seconds.
By connecting this archive layer to HNVNS's dynamic worklist allocation module, radiologists review studies automatically inside structured reporting panels without needing third-party desktop tools.
